MELBOURNE, Florida, August 20, 2009 — Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) has received the University of Central Florida (UCF) Partnership Award for its ongoing financial support of academic programs that enhance educational and career opportunities for students. The international communications and information technology company was recognized during the Colburn Society Reception held on campus Wednesday, August 19.
"A champion of our faculty and students for three decades, Harris Corporation has helped to establish UCF's national reputation as a partnership university,'" said UCF President John C. Hitt. "Our UCF community benefits every day from the enthusiastic support that Harris provides for our academic programs, our state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories, and our research mission."
Harris has a three-decades long relationship with UCF, including an ongoing agreement to promote research and development in engineering fields. In 2005, Harris donated $3 million that was matched by state funds and used to equip research labs in the school's Harris Corporation Engineering Center. Harris also has invested more than $3 million in a research program that provides students with valuable opportunities to work side-by-side with the company's top experts.
"The relationship we have with UCF is an outstanding example of the benefits that result when industry and education work together to achieve greater common objectives," said Bob Henry, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Harris, who accepted the award. "UCF has a key role in preparing the high-technology workforce of Central Florida, and nearly 700 UCF graduates are employed at all levels of our company. It is an honor to receive the university's Partnership Award."
The Partnership Award is presented annually to an organization from the public or private sector whose collaborative efforts with University of Central Florida (UCF) students, faculty, and staff advance the university's goal to be America's leading partnership university. Previous award recipients include Bright House Networks, Darden Restaurants and Darden Restaurant Foundation, Inc., Florida Hospital, Lockheed Martin and the Walt Disney World Company.
