Harris Corporation Unveils New Datacasting System; Television Broadcasters Can Generate New Revenue Streams by Using Untapped Bandwidth

LAS VEGAS, April 19, 2004 – At NAB2004, Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) has unveiled the DATAplus™ Network Datacasting System, which provides broadcasters and content providers the ability to use untapped bandwidth in video streams to distribute media-rich data and services to a large number of recipients without expensive Internet connections. DATAplus can be seen at the Harris Broadcast Communications Division booth #C1906 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

With DATAplus, in addition to digital programming broadcasters can generate new revenue streams by providing media-rich content and services such as public safety information, educational material, targeted advertising to remote locations, content delivery across terrestrial and satellite networks and multimedia-on-demand to viewers. Additionally, DATAplus will allow providers to offer the extra bandwidth to outside organizations such as media distribution companies that want to distribute content, but do not have the available infrastructure. For example, advertisers will be able to send changing messages to kiosks in hotel lobbies or amusement parks. The DATAplus is currently shipping and is a competitively priced media distribution system.

DATAplus provides a complete content delivery system in one tool with universal networking through three main components: Content Scheduler, Content Manager, and Content Receiver. Content Scheduler facilitates the collection, organization and scheduling of metadata for delivery or broadcast, then instructs Content Manager to transfer the files. Content Manager retrieves data from content sources, encrypts and encapsulates the data, then inserts it into the broadcast stream or IP network. Content Receiver scans the digital stream, and then extracts data from it for transport to a user's computer or network file server. The system's components work together to manage and distribute the content generation process from ingest to broadcast.
