Tekelec Selects Harris Network Management for Orange Personal Communications Services

MELBOURNE, Florida, May 17, 2000 - Harris Corporation today announced that it has been selected by Tekelec, a leading supplier of signaling and control systems, to provide its network management platform (HNM™) as part of a total, Internet Protocol (IP) SS7 signaling transport solution in the United Kingdom.

As part of the Orange Personal Communications Services Ltd., HNM will manage two Tekelec IP7 Secure Gateways™ and twenty-four IP7 Edge™ nodes from a central location to ensure uninterrupted availability of network management data. In addition, Tekelec also has integrated HNM in signaling solutions provided to some of its other customers around the world, such as MobilRom in Romania, VodaFone in Australia and Uni2 in Spain.

With more than six million customers, Orange is the UK's most advanced digital mobile phone network. It provides a broad range of personal communications services - including digital cellular telephone and paging - with coverage to more than 99 percent of the U.K. population.

"The ability to graphically make status information immediately available to operations, maintenance, and customer care personnel, was crucial to the launch of Orange's new signaling network," said Paul Miller, vice president IP Telephony, Network Systems Division, Tekelec. "HNM's comprehensive and centralized management, coupled with easy-to-interpret graphical displays and powerful alarm capabilities, made it the perfect fit."

Additionally, HNM will manage Tekelec's IP7 Secure Gateways, which provide global title translation and signaling for central network routing and control. Over 2,600 SS7 links will interface to Tekelec's IP7 Edge nodes, which will connect to the signaling gateways via IP connection.

"This new network will allow Orange to offer next-generation services to its customers," said Jim Odom, vice president of network management for Harris' Communications Products Division. "It also provides Harris an opportunity to apply HNM's benefits in a very visible, IP-based Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) application." GSM is the wireless telephone standard in Europe.

Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC), headquartered in Calabasas, California, develops innovative network switching and diagnostic solutions that enable the convergence of traditional and converged wireline, wireless, and IP voice and data communications networks. The company also provides products and solutions for call centers and other telecommunications markets.

HNM is provided by Harris' Communications Products Division (CPD), which delivers solutions to public and private communications service providers around the world. CPD's solutions focus on the needs of operations, maintenance, and installation professionals in deregulated markets worldwide, by providing next level line test and network management systems, as well as test sets and tools.
